Expert Care for Mouth and Tongue Problems
Your mouth helps you eat, speak and breathe. Most mouth sores are minor and settle on their own, but a sore, patch or lump that lasts, keeps returning or gets worse deserves a proper look.
Our ENT team examines your mouth, tongue and throat, looks for the cause and explains your options in plain language. If part of your problem is better handled by a dentist or another specialist, we will tell you.

ENT specialist or dentist?
Mouth problems can start in different places. As a general guide:
- Dentist first: toothache, broken teeth, gum problems, or a sore clearly caused by a sharp tooth, filling, brace or denture.
- ENT specialist: sores or patches that do not heal, tongue or throat problems, swallowing difficulty, salivary gland swelling, or a lump in the mouth or neck.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What mouth problems does an ENT specialist evaluate?
An ENT specialist examines the mouth, tongue and throat. This includes mouth ulcers that do not heal, tongue sores, white or red patches, dry mouth, burning mouth, salivary gland swelling and lumps in the mouth. Problems that start in the teeth or gums, such as cavities or gum disease, are usually managed by a dentist.
Should I see an ENT specialist or a dentist for a mouth ulcer?
If a sharp tooth, filling, brace or denture is clearly rubbing the area, a dentist is a sensible first stop. An ENT evaluation is appropriate when an ulcer does not heal, is on the tongue or in the throat, bleeds, comes with trouble swallowing, or appears together with a lump in the neck. Your ENT specialist may also advise you to see a dentist or another specialist for part of your care.
How long does a mouth ulcer take to heal?
Many minor mouth ulcers settle within one to two weeks. A mouth ulcer or sore that is still there after two weeks should be examined, even if it is not very painful.
Can a mouth ulcer be a sign of something serious?
Most mouth ulcers are not serious. However, an ulcer, patch or lump that does not heal can occasionally be an early sign of a more serious condition, including oral cancer. This is why lasting changes should be examined rather than watched for months. Being examined does not mean you have cancer.
Do tobacco, jorda, gul, supari or betel quid (paan) matter?
Yes. Smoking, smokeless tobacco such as jorda and gul, and betel quid are recognised risk factors for oral problems, including oral cancer. If you use any of them and have a sore, patch or lump that is not healing, please do not delay an examination. Your doctor can also advise you on stopping.
Can vitamin or iron deficiency cause mouth ulcers?
In some people, repeated mouth ulcers are linked to low iron or vitamin levels. Your doctor can decide whether any tests are needed. Taking supplements without advice may not treat the real cause of the problem.
Will I need a biopsy or other tests?
Not every mouth problem needs tests. If an ulcer, patch or lump looks suspicious or does not heal, your specialist may advise a test, such as a tissue sample, to find out what it is. They will explain why a test is needed, what it involves and where it will be done before you decide.
Can I treat a mouth ulcer at home?
For a minor ulcer that is clearly improving, gentle care can help: keep your mouth clean with soft brushing, drink enough water, and avoid very spicy, salty, acidic or hot foods while it is sore. Avoid tobacco and betel quid. If the ulcer is not improving after two weeks, please have it examined instead of trying more home remedies.
